Max and his Blue Baby
Note: I was so tired this morning when I wrote this I forgot to hit “publish” sorry it is out of order
“Mommy I’m thirsty.” <sigh> it is 3:42 in the morning and this is the second time Max has been up. The first time it was “Mommy, I can’t find my baby.” At least now I don’t have to run downstairs for water anymore.
My mom was here visiting recently from India and she suggested putting a sun-tea jar in their room for water. You know one of those glass ones with the spout, our moms all had when we were kids? Great! Put one in their room full of water and I only have to fill it like once a week! It is summer, it can’t be hard to find right? Wrong! Target had a glass one for $14.99 but it had a stupid twist-off spout. That is a kid disaster waiting to happen. Linens and Things had a ceramic one for $30. Pottery Barn had a plastic one for $60. Harris Teeter and every other place I checked had only plastic for $9.99 and up. Hello hasn’t any one heard of BPA free? <sheesh>
I had totally given up when my husband and I were looking at laptops for me. Have you seen the new Dell Studio laptops? They have some great upgrades, like 2.5GHz/800Mhz hard drive FSB/6MB cache, 1920×1200 resolution & 256MB Radeon video card, you can add AND I can get one in lime green. Hello, gorgeous!
I wanted to see one in person, but they were not in stores yet. Wal-Mart was the only place near us that carries Dell laptops and they had one very similar, so my mom and I dropped by to heft one. As we were walking down an isle towards the electronics, <ahhhhh> (cue angelic inspirational moment music) there is was. A glass, 2 gallon sun-tea jar with push-button spout and twist-on top for $4.69. I had to thunk it twice to assure myself it really was glass. I bought two. Generally I try not to ever buy from Wal-Mart. I try to vote with my pocket book, but seriously? $4.69? Plus they had a box of tiny drink umbrellas for $2. I made pina coladas.
So back to Mr. Max who is keeping me up all night. The water is now an easy problem to solve and finding baby in the tangled blankets was easy too. The harder part was the “Mommy snuggle me please.” Does he have to be so cute and remember his manners now? I just want to get some sleep before the sun comes up.
He snuggles his blue baby in one hand and my index finger in the other, pulling my arm and wrapping it around himself so it will wake him when I try to sneak away. I try to remember that too soon he won’t want me anymore. That he will push me away when I want to kiss him and that I won’t always have the chance to snuggle up his tiny little warm body, his hair smelling faintly of damp puppy and sunscreen. His blue baby will sit on a shelf and I will be lucky if I get to kiss him goodnight.
So for now, I get to stumble through my day in a sleep deprived haze. And until then my little monster man, I will try to remember to appreciate our midnight snuggles.
